Does Ray Kurzweil See the Future You See?

Is this the future you see?

Most of us will not really concerned with the future, and that may be all right, then again it might be setting people up for serious disappointment. For many the existence of everyday life presents enough problems so that looking ahead is futile.

Others like to think of the future fondly. They are inquisitive and excited about the potential that today’s technologies could create. Many of us who watch science fiction tend to think along these lines.

Others who are concerned about this significant problems that face the world today are pessimistic. They look at the growing population in the changes in the ecological health of the world, and they feel very wary.

Predictions can be found that follow both the optimistic and pessimistic lines of thinking.

Most recently the famous inventor Ray Kurzweil wrote a book titled The Singularity Is near: a True Story about the Future. The book now produced into a movie format is to premiere Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the 30th annual Breckenridge film Festival. This man predicts that human intelligence is approaching a new era where the use of technology will expand the power and veracity of human thinking beyond any levels known previously.

Quoting their web site:

“The Onset of the 21st Century will be an era in which the very nature of what it means to be human will be both enriched and challenged as our species breaks the shackles of its genetic legacy and achieves inconceivable heights of intelligence, material progress, and longevity. While the social and philosophical ramifications of these changes will be profound, and the threats they pose considerable, celebrated futurist Ray Kurzweil presents a view of the coming age that is both a dramatic culmination of centuries of technological ingenuity and a genuinely inspiring vision of our ultimate destiny.”

Some of the ideas that were listed on the film website also included the use of nonbiological intelligence to match the human intelligence or as most people call it artificial intelligence. You get the idea that we’re going to use these robotic and computerized technologies and integrate them into our biological systems. The concept that humanity can live forever is also presented.

Now if I was selling something, or promoting a movie, or trying to make millions of dollars, I might say well this is great, this is our future.

But I don’t fit that bill. I don’t see a future where our use of technology will help us to eliminate polluting the environment, overcoming pollution and poverty, and extending our longevity and makes the world eutopian. The 21st century world I live  provides those extensions and benefits to those who are rich.

We think about all this? What do you think the future holds?

Is History Funny?

We have all heard the expression “history repeats itself.” And so we also know that human beings have a tendency to forget harmful and even wicked events. We bury them. And once we bury the history, do we forget it? It struck me today that when Jerry Lewis died, people start talking about the film […]

Of Perfecting the Human Genome

Of Perfecting the Human Genome

What do we do when we’re all physically and mentally perfect? Congratulate ourselves on eradicating the need to help each other?  Shouldn’t everyone fend for themselves?  Is human society evolving or turning neanderthal? It’s always best to start a philosophical piece with questions. How perfect is the human race today?  We still have a world […]

The Trash Economy

In the trash economy, they even pay you for picking up trash. You get fully state benefits, medical, and retirement. All you have to do is vote! The state will give you all you need to live in one handy-dandy, little white-plastic shopping bag. It’s all about the taxes. Without a balanced approach, states are […]

America the oligarchy: Cheating for the rich

Ever since I was a kid, I hated the idea of cheating. I didn’t like cheating because cheating made competition null and void. When someone cheated, they were usually a bully type of person. I suspect that’s the same today. People who are really highly competitive, and love to grind down opponents tend to want […]
