Raising Kids for Gangs

Kids are innocent until shown otherwise, but unprotected kids are the fuel of American gangs.  Factors that set up these kids for failure include having a family which lives in poverty, abuses drugs or alcohol, and other factors that tear apart families, like having a mentally ill parent, having a terminally ill parent, etc.  Child abuse is often a correlation involved in these cases.  According to statistics, derived from the 2005 National Gang Survey, there are over 731,000 active gang members nationally, an 11% growth from 1997.  In my mind, the chief element is the absence of a father and the breakdown of the nuclear family.

Could that be how kids that look like this:

Turn out to look like this?

Jesse James was a boy who lost his father at the age of three.  His history is documented in books and movies.  The child was the son of a wealthy hemp farmer and Baptist minister, but at three, that has little effect on a child who has barely weaned.  What trouble that must have caused his mother to have to raise children without a husband around.

Billy the Kid was also a young man destined for notoriety or infamy.  He wasn’t really in a gang, but he was an outlaw who grew up without a father.  He lived a life of poverty due to an absent father, and his mother died of tuberculosis.  Later he lived with a foster care family, and was not long after being arrested for juvenile crimes before escaping jail and becoming a fugitive.  I found it interesting that William Henry McCarty was seen as an ordinary kid by his school teacher prior to the failing of his home.

Foster care has been shown to have high levels of failure.  The National Coalition for Child Protection Reform suggests the foster care is a failed system.  Their web page states:

Foster kids have double the rate for mental illness.

1/3 report being abused by their foster home caregivers

Rate of Post Traumatic Stress was higher for foster kids than Iraqi vets.

The solution is not for state-funded care, but transference of kids to family or maybe the institutional church could step in.  But the world has a cold heart, and the system has no heart.

As you know many folks read this page because they are only interested in the provocative Stanley Kubrick movie, Clockwork Orange, which portrays that  the sensible totalitarianism scheme of rehabilitating convicts is through scientific means of shocking them so that what was pleasurable becomes sickening.  If you don’t provide these kids the right stuff when they need it, they are welcome to join gangs where they feel their lives have a bond with others.

Is History Funny?

We have all heard the expression “history repeats itself.” And so we also know that human beings have a tendency to forget harmful and even wicked events. We bury them. And once we bury the history, do we forget it? It struck me today that when Jerry Lewis died, people start talking about the film […]

Of Perfecting the Human Genome

Of Perfecting the Human Genome

What do we do when we’re all physically and mentally perfect? Congratulate ourselves on eradicating the need to help each other?  Shouldn’t everyone fend for themselves?  Is human society evolving or turning neanderthal? It’s always best to start a philosophical piece with questions. How perfect is the human race today?  We still have a world […]

The Trash Economy

In the trash economy, they even pay you for picking up trash. You get fully state benefits, medical, and retirement. All you have to do is vote! The state will give you all you need to live in one handy-dandy, little white-plastic shopping bag. It’s all about the taxes. Without a balanced approach, states are […]

America the oligarchy: Cheating for the rich

Ever since I was a kid, I hated the idea of cheating. I didn’t like cheating because cheating made competition null and void. When someone cheated, they were usually a bully type of person. I suspect that’s the same today. People who are really highly competitive, and love to grind down opponents tend to want […]
